Speed or Comfort? What if You Can Have Both? Meet With Your New Best Friend – The Suzuki 1400 GSX
What can I say about this bike other than the Suzuki 1400 GSX is really big. I mean not just the engine capacity but the whole thing together looks enormous. Whenever someone wants to buy a bike the first impression is everything because we humans tend to make more decisions based on emotions than on logic. However in this case it is not a problem to listen to your emotions because your logic side will also be satisfied if you are getting to know this rocket. Basically what happened with this bike is that the retro style met with modern technology. At first glance it is a pleasure for the eyes with the nice blue and white colour scheme accompanied by a lot of chrome surface. To remain on the classic side it has air and oil cooled engine which has an old kind of shape bringing back good memories for the older riders. There are two big chrome exhaust pipes and they are doing their job perfectly because they make the bike running close to silent. Also here comes the big chromed-around headlight to take its part in the retro style. I am sure the huge front discs with 6 piston calipers are going to give you a lot of confidence that this bike will stop instantly at will. Do you remember nowadays to bikes with twin rear shock absorbers? Me neither. Just another surprise to bring back long forgotten memories but don’t be mislead by the retro signs because it is way far from older bikes which has problems with handling and basically everything else what you simply got used to or escape from. The engine is fuel injected and it has a respectable 104 horsepower at 7000rpm but what will mostly amaze you is the high torque which is available from 2000 rpm. You don’t have to rev high this bike if you want to go fast and it doesn’t matter which gear you are in when accelerating. It just simply pulls your arm out of your shoulders without regret. So when you jump aboard the first thing you will experience that it is BIG. Treat it with respect because 226 kg dry weight is much to lift for most of us. When you hit the start button you will only know it started because of the smooth vibration through the handlebars but without the usual engine noise. Surely the Suzuki 1400 GSX doesn’t look like a sport bike but it is a serious mistake to think it doesn’t go like one. Just open the throttle at any revs in any gear and you can experience the arm-pulling acceleration instantly. However due to the upright riding position your top speed is going to be limited by your neck muscles but you are going to be fine approximately up to 180 km/h. The cornering stability is massive just don’t expect it to be like a light 600 sporty but it will keep the cornering curve steadily. Over time and after a lot of miles you will wonder how it is possible to ride for such a long time without any neck, back and arse pain. Maybe the answer is because this big baby has a good appetite so you have to jump off after every 240 kilometres to fill up the tank but other than that there are no bad points at all. Basically this bike is going to be your best friend through the summer season whether you want to blow off your mother-in-law from the back seat on a motorway doing a 140 mph or if you just want to jump down to the corner shop for some more cold beer or if you want to escape from the city where there is no mobile phone reception so your wife can’t disturb your peace of mind. Just make sure you don’t dress too warmly in the summer because 1400cc engine will give you more than enough heat to boil your eggs.
